Accessibility
Our clients have asked us to focus specifically on those with learning difficulties regarding usability and accessibility when producing the website. We have produced some guidelines that we will aim to achieve in order to make the website accessible and usable to the users.
We feel that people with certain learning difficulties may find reading difficult. We will aid them by providing:
- Clear and Concise language
- Short Paragraphs
- A ‘Reasonable’ sized text
- A Sans-serif font
- High contrasting text-to-background colour
- Limit the scrolling required on each page
- Links to the home page from every page (via the website title and navigation bar)
- A navigation bar at the top of the screen that will remain consistent throughout every page
- Buttons with relevant icons (the TV button will contain the word TV and a simple but recognisable image of a TV etc)
- A colour co-ordinated system for each type of media that we will be writing about
- Clearly labelled links so that the user will be know where the link will take them before using it.
- A logical structure that flows naturally and predictably
- We will change the colour of visited links so that the user will know where they have and haven’t been.
- Alt tags on all images and graphics
- Page structures that can be read and understood with limited design and without CSS
- The ability to tab through links in the natural fashion, starting with the top left to the bottom right of the page.
- The core information will be in the centre of the page.
- Enough white space that the pages aren’t cluttered but not too much that the page appears empty.
- Compliance with both IE 7 and Mozilla Firefox
- Limit the use large images (use a standard and consistent size of image for each section)
We also believe that people with certain learning difficulties may find it difficult to navigate an unusually laid out website with unconventional navigation methods and structure. In order to avoid this we will provide:
We will also include other standard usability/accessibility guidelines such as:
