In the 1990's, Sierra Leone was in chaos. Civil war was raging and millions were forced to leave their homes. Tens of thousands died. And somewhere, in the western world, businessmen were making a fortune out of it.
Blood Diamond is a fictional thriller set to the background of a real event, and it packs a raw and brutal punch. Solomon Vandy (Djimon Hounsou) is a slave for a vicious rebel gang, separated from his family and forced into mining for diamonds. When he finds a giant pink diamond, he hopes the diamond will buy his family's freedom. Hiding it and escaping, he is forced into enlisting the aid of ruthless mercenary Danny Archer (Leonardo DiCaprio) to help him sell it. Firstly, however, they have to find it, and Serra Leone has just become a war zone.
Archer realises their safest way through rebel territory is with the help of Maddy Bowen (Jennifer Connelly), an opportunistic journalist with a taste for adventure. Her terms are simple: she wants Archer's story in return – a stunning exposé on the corrupt diamond industry, beginning in the mud of South Africa and ending in the limos of London. Archer agrees, but in a country consumed by civil unrest, the lines of trust are rarely left unbroken.
